Two Trees

THE BEGINNING

In 2002 a group of concerned Ventura citizens organized opposition to a development proposal for 1390 homes above Foothill Road. Thanks to this group and other environmental activists, the project required approval by Ventura voters.

After voters rejected this proposal by 70% to 30%, members of the steering committee formed a 501(c) (4) non-profit group, the Ventura Citizens for Hillside Preservation (VCHP) to continue to advocate for the protection of Ventura’s hillsides, open space, river watersheds, and quality of life.

Accomplishments

VCHP has accomplished a great deal over the years. We collaborate with other organizations and educate voters when important issues arise. We helped:

Promote the Hillside Voter Participation Area (Measure P) ordinance giving Ventura voters a voice in hillside developments.

Defeat the above referenced 1390 home hillside development.

Prevent annexation of Cañada Larga Valley; advocate for the Ventura River Parkway;
stop a large development above Ventura High School.

Organize Ventura signature gathering and voter education to extend SOAR protections through 2050, which successfully achieved passage into law.

Defeat a proposed county zoning change that would have facilitated the addition of almost 700 residential units in the Ventura River floodplain.

Continuing Advocacy

We endorse candidates for City Council and County Board of Supervisors whose views are consistent with our mission statement. We follow local agendas and speak before elected representatives on important issues. We continue to meet with elected officials to share our research and opinions.

Our community outreach includes educational booths at the Ventura’s July 4th Street Fair & environmental events like the annual Patagonia/SOAR Salmon Run.

Please Join Us

All the above is important and satisfying work. We do make a difference! In order to continue our mission, we invite, no, we urge you to consider joining us in our worthwhile cause.

VCHP is an all volunteer non-profit with no membership dues. If you’d like to receive communication from us please click the JOIN US link and let us know what interests you most.
